Aurora Alert is a Chrome extension that monitors and notifies users about aurora activity. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices.

Aurora Alert does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data.

How the Extension Works

Aurora Alert works by:

Fetching public data from NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center APIs
Processing this data entirely within your browser
Storing preferences (like notification thresholds) only in your browser's local storage

API Usage

Aurora Alert connects to the following public APIs:

https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/json/planetary_k_index_1m.json - To fetch the current Kp index
https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/products/alerts.json - To check for geomagnetic storm alerts

These connections are made directly from your browser to NOAA's servers. No data is routed through our servers.

Permissions

The extension requests the following permissions:

alarms: To schedule regular checks for aurora activity
notifications: To send you alerts when aurora activity reaches your preferred threshold
storage: To save your notification preferences
host_permissions: To connect to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center APIs

Chrome Storage Usage

Aurora Alert uses Chrome's local storage to save:

Your notification threshold preference
The last time you received a notification
The latest Kp index value
The latest alert status

This information is stored only on your device and is not transmitted elsewhere.

Children's Privacy

Our extension does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
