Frequently Asked Questions
How does SpyBye work?
SpyBye uses Chrome's Management API to safely check all your installed extensions against our database of 58 known malicious extensions. It compares both extension IDs and names to identify potential threats. The entire scan happens locally on your device - we don't collect any data about your extensions.
What does SpyBye do when it finds a malicious extension?
If SpyBye detects a malicious extension, it will:
- Show a red warning message
- List all malicious extensions found
- Provide direct links for removing each extension
- Show information about what data may have been compromised
SpyBye will never automatically remove extensions - it only provides information and links to help you remove them yourself.
How do I use SpyBye?
Using SpyBye is simple:
- Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store
- Click the SpyBye icon in your Chrome toolbar
- The scan runs automatically and shows results immediately
- If any malicious extensions are found, click the provided links to remove them
How often should I scan with SpyBye?
We recommend running a scan after installing any new extensions or if you notice unusual browser behavior. The scan only takes seconds to complete, so it's easy to run it periodically for peace of mind.
Does SpyBye update its database of malicious extensions?
The current version of SpyBye is targeted at the specific set of 58 malicious extensions reported in April 2025. We plan to release updates if new large-scale malicious extension campaigns are discovered. Follow our announcements on the Chrome Web Store page for information about updates.
Why does SpyBye need the "management" permission?
SpyBye requires the "management" permission to access Chrome's Management API, which allows it to see the list of extensions installed in your browser. This is the minimum permission required for the extension to function. SpyBye does not request any other permissions and cannot access your browsing history, passwords, or personal information.
Is SpyBye free to use?
Yes, SpyBye is completely free to use. We created this tool as a public service following the discovery of widespread malicious extensions.
Important: SpyBye only scans for known malicious extensions from the April 2025 report. While it can help protect against these specific threats, it should not replace regular security practices, such as keeping your browser updated and being cautious about which extensions you install.
