Getting Started

PlainPaste is a simple browser extension that automatically converts formatted text to plain text when you paste. Here's how to use it:

  1. Install PlainPaste from the Chrome Web Store
  2. That's it! The extension is enabled by default and will strip formatting from all pastes
  3. To temporarily keep formatting for a specific paste, hold the Alt key while pasting
  4. To access settings, click the PlainPaste icon in your browser toolbar

Features

Automatic Plain Text Paste

Whenever you paste text into any editable area on the web, PlainPaste will automatically strip all formatting, giving you clean, plain text.

Temporary Override

Need to keep formatting for just one paste? Hold the Alt key while pasting to temporarily bypass PlainPaste.

Per-site Settings

You can enable or disable PlainPaste for specific websites. Click the PlainPaste icon and use the "Plain paste on this site" toggle.

Global Toggle

Need to disable PlainPaste everywhere temporarily? Use the "Plain paste globally" toggle in the popup menu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does PlainPaste work in all applications?
A: PlainPaste works in all web applications that run in Chrome, including Gmail, Google Docs, Slack, Jira, and more. It doesn't work in desktop applications outside your browser.
Q: Why isn't PlainPaste working on some sites?
A: Some web applications use custom clipboard handling that might bypass PlainPaste. If you find a site where it doesn't work, please let us know via the support email.
Q: Does PlainPaste work with images?
A: No, PlainPaste specifically handles text content. Image pasting will continue to work normally.
Q: Can I change the override key from Alt to something else?
A: Currently, the Alt key is the only supported override key. We're considering making this customizable in future updates.
Q: Does PlainPaste collect any data?
A: No. PlainPaste doesn't collect or transmit any data. It only stores your preferences (which sites to enable/disable) in your browser's storage. See our Privacy Policy for more details.

Troubleshooting

PlainPaste isn't working at all

  1. Check if the extension is enabled in Chrome's extension menu
  2. Try reloading the page where you're having issues
  3. Ensure the global toggle is enabled in the PlainPaste popup
  4. Check if the site-specific toggle is enabled for the current site

The Alt key override isn't working

Some websites might capture the Alt key for their own keyboard shortcuts. In these cases, try using the site-specific toggle to disable PlainPaste on that site when you need to paste with formatting.

PlainPaste interferes with specific site functionality

If PlainPaste causes issues with a specific site, you can disable it for just that site by clicking the PlainPaste icon and toggling off "Plain paste on this site."
